anticipate cost hikes
shore up your approach to planning and budgeting
make cuts strategically with minimum impact on morale and productivity

March 2010: "Immigration and Customs Enforcement:   Hiring Legal Workers" - Lynda Buehring and Lindsey Smith, Special Agents, Dept. of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

We've all read about raids on companies that revealed large numbers of undocumented workers on site. We don't want that to happen to any of our employers, so we have invited Special Agents from U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ("ICE") to come and help us gain an understanding of why it is so important to verify the identity documents you're taking from new employees.

ICE has created a voluntary program called "IMAGE" (ICE Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers) that is intended to reduce the presence of undocumented workers who obtain employment by fraudulent means (using false documents, identity theft, and the like).

Covered in this session:

  • IMAGE Program Description
  • Form I-9 Employer Compliance
  • Document Fraud/Social Security
  • IMAGE Discussion and Questions

About the Presenters:  Lynda Buehring is a Senior Special Agent, and Lindsey Smith is a Special Agent for the U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement division of the Department of Homeland Security.   They perform special training for employers, and are based in Seattle.

April 2010: "Motivating Non-Monetarily: Carrot or Stick?" - Susan Brandt, Washington Employers

It is often assumed that money is the primary motivator of employees. This assumption requires us to try find funds we don’t have, or give up any plans of motivational efforts due to lack of financial support. This assumption is often untrue. Fortunately there are many non-monetary motivators that increase the likelihood that employees will want to give 100% and do an outstanding job. These motivators can be punitive (the stick approach) or rewarding (the carrot approach). Since the former often produces more negative consequences than positive, the presentation will focus on the relationship between recognition and improved business results.

About the Presenter: Susan Brandt is a Human Resources Management staff member at Washington Employers with 20+ years experience as a human resource leader and consultant to a wide range of industries. She holds a Master of Arts Degree in Organizational Psychology from Antioch University, an undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon, and a Training Specialist certification from the University of Washington. Focusing on individual and organizational effectiveness, she delivers courses on Supervision, Leadership, Performance Management, Hiring, Goal Setting, and Harassment Prevention.
